Abortion

On August 6, 2007, Community of Faith Church in Carterville, Illinois placed a full page ad in USA Today condemning abortion as incompatible with biblical, Christian faith. Their ad stated that "God cannot bless a nation that sheds innocent blood. Those of us who hold firmly to this belief will NOT SUPPORT ANY CANDIDATE WHO PROMOTES 'CHOICE' AND THE DEATH OF UNBORN CHILDREN." Their ad showed a famous photo of a 21-week old fetus holding a surgeon's finger during a surgical procedure. To read the story from the church's web site and to access links to the original photo and the ad, click here.

For more years than not in my adult life, whether a political candidate is pro-life (anti-abortion) or pro-murder (pro-abortion) has often been the deciding factor when I vote in an election. (I will not allow murderous liberals or godless heathen to hijack the positive-sounding word "choice" and use it as a synonym for murdering innocent, unborn children, so I will not use that term when describing the opposite of pro-life.)

When reading today from Psalm 106 in The Evidence Bible, I read with interest the footnote by Ray Comfort on verses 35-39. The story is about how the people of Israel strayed from God, intermingled with pagan nations and sinned greatly against God even to the unthinkable point of sacrificing their sons and daughters. The footnote by Comfort says the following:

"Abortion, a Result of Idolatry. How can people believe in God and yet believe in the killing of children through abortion? Simply because they 'serve idols.' Idolatry is perhaps the greatest of all sins because it opens the door to unrestrained evil--'My god gives me the right to choose!' etc. It gives sinners license not only to tolerate sin, but to sanction it, fanned by demonic influence. Those who create a god in their own image feel at liberty to go 'a whoring with their own inventions.'"

Then the footnote illustates how easy it is to create your own god who is not the God of the Bible by quoting from a Washington Post story from January 9, 2000:

"Over the years, Ed and Joanne Liberani have found many reasons to summon God. But now, at middle age, they've boiled it down to one essential: 'Not to get clobbered by life.' So sometime in the past ten years the Liveranis began to build their own church, salvaging bits of their old religion that they liked and chucking the rest. The first to go were an angry and vengeful God and hell--'That's just something they say to scare you,' Ed said. They kept Jesus, 'because Jesus is big on love.'"

When you create a god of your own liking who likes the sins you like and doesn't like the sins you don't like, then you are not worshipping the God of Scripture. You have made a god in your own image which is idolatry and which is a violation of the second commandment. Such are the mental gymnastics supporters of abortion who claim to be Christian must perform to arrive at such an anti-biblical position. No such god exists.

We are not called to be politically correct. We are called to have a biblical worldview and to honor God in all our beliefs. As voters, that biblical worldview should be present with us and guiding us when we vote.

Did you know your church in the 1970's leased space in the old Norton Hospital building to an abortion clinic. Look it up.

Here's the truth about what you are referring to. Walnut Street purchased the old Norton Hospital in the mid 1980s. There was a brief time prior to the building being torn down and Treyton Oak Towers being built in its place when Walnut Street did try to lease space in the building to cover the cost of the purchase. The individual responsible for entering into those leasing arrangements entered into a contract with an abortion provider without the knowledge of the church. It was only a matter of a few weeks before the church became aware of the situation. As soon as it was known, the church immediately took action to end the lease and the clinic left the building less than two months after moving in.

So there is some truth to what you say, but the whole story does not carry the implications of your brief, anonymous posting. The fault was that of an individual and perhaps inadequate oversight of processes. The church took the right and moral action as soon as they had any knowledge of it.
